5 tips that will help prevent baby bald spots and cradle cap.

Baby bald spots are caused by spending time on their backs. Babies rub their heads on crib mattresses, bassinets, etc. causing hair loss. This hair loss is usually temporary and the hair will grow back. Parents should make sure to keep the baby’s head elevated and encourage them to roll on their back to sleep. Regular combing can also help to reduce friction and hair loss.

Silk Covers

Silk car seat/bassinet covers help babies with bald spots by reducing friction on the baby’s head. This friction is the main reason for matting, knotting, frizz, and eventually the dreaded baby bald spot.

Silk creates a luxurious, frictionless environment for babies' hair to grow. It is hypoallergenic and uninhabitable by dust mites, making it suitable for eczema, asthma, and allergies. It is soft and breathable, allowing the baby's hair to grow without any tangles or knots. It is also gentle on the scalp, preventing irritation.

Brush before bed

Gently brushing baby’s hair before bed minimizes the knots and eventually rubs off (creating bald patches) while baby sleeps. If you can make sure there are no knots present before the baby nods off, you are one step ahead of the game!  This also helps to prevent tangles and breakage. Regular brushing can also help to reduce cradle cap, a common condition in babies.

Swap the sleeping side

If you’ve established a sleep routine, chances are you place the baby at the same end of the crib each time you put them down to sleep. This means they will turn and rest their heads in one direction more than the other (especially if one side of the crib is against a wall). This means pressure on the hair and skin is not distributed evenly, leaving your baby with bald patches and flat spots.

Try alternating the ends of the crib where the baby's feet are placed to even things up!

Avoid harsh chemicals

Try to avoid washing your baby's hair too often. Your baby's hair produces very little oil, so 1x-2x per week will do. SmootiePie products are formulated with natural, organic, and vegan ingredients. Our 2-in-1 Shampoo and Body Gel is perfect for hair wash days. If your baby has a cradle cap after washing hair, use our 2-in-1 conditioner. Second, apply our Baby Cradle Cap Tea to the baby's scalp and our Baby Stimulating Growth Oil to the hair and scalp. Don’t pick at the scabs. Let them fall out alone. You can also use our Baby Hair Oil as a gentle oil massage. This reduces dandruff and p hair growth.

Encourage tummy time

As well as encouraging healthy neck strength and muscular development, more time spent on the baby’s tummy will reduce the amount of time she spends on her back. This will prevent her from pressing her head into the surface below.

These steps combined with Smootiepie baby hair products will prevent baby bald spots, prevent cradle cap, and help your baby's hair grow.
